TWO brothers who are the siblings of women police officers were gunned down yesterday morning at their La Puerta, Diego Martin home.
Police reports indicated that Joshua Johnson, 33, and Jerome Johnson, 31, were at their home along Broome Street, La Puerta, Diego Martin, when, about 9.45 a.m., residents heard several loud explosions.
Two men were observed running along the dry banks of a river which runs parallel to the road at the back of nearby homes.
A further check found Jerome lying in a pool of blood to the front of the house, while Joshua was found covered in blood at the back of the home.
Both men were shot multiple times about their bodies.
The police and Emergency Health Services were notified but both men died of their injuries before help arrived.
A team of officers from the Western Division and the Homicide Bureau, including Insp Henry Dan and Sgt Aneaud, responded to the report and the area was cordoned off.
Speaking briefly to reporters yesterday, one of the sisters of the two slain men said Joshua Johnson was an unemployed father of two children– ages ten and five– and had only recently moved back to the area.
She said Jerome suffered from a mental disability and she had no idea why he was killed.
Residents of the area claimed that Joshua “had a criminal past” and this was the only theory that came to mind as to why anyone would want him dead.
They believed that Jerome was killed because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Quiet area
Councillor for the area Michael Alonzo spoke to members of the media while on the scene and said he was saddened by the turn of events.
“What is really disturbing to me is that one of the brothers is mentally handicapped. So this whole thing is just shocking. In fact, it’s even more so because just up to this morning I saw him on the roadway and he asked me for something to eat, and I obliged him. And further to that, this is a quiet area, and nothing like this has ever happened in this area before. So the entirety of the incident has left me shocked.
“I think in the case of Jerome it was a case of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I believe this was an isolated incident and I hope the community can go back to how it was before this,” Alonzo said.
He said he understood there was another relative who was traumatised by the shooting as she was “around the area” or had “just came into the home” after the incident had taken place.
Alonzo said he believed this woman should receive counselling, if she desired, and the same should be made available for any other relatives. -Express
