Shopkeeper murdered in Arima
Sat 31 January 2015 - Around 1:45 PM Saturday 52-year-old John Kalicharan of Maturita Extension Arima was standing outside the mini-mart he operated in front of his home.
The shopkeeper saw a man with a firearm approaching, so Kalicharan ran away in a futile attempt to escape. The gunman followed the shopkeeper and shot him to death in the backyard.
Police were called and arrived a short time later to begin their investigations. The victim's body was taken to the St James Forensic Science Centre for an autopsy to be performed on Monday.
Kalicharan was convicted of four counts of armed robbery back in 1989. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison and 30 lashes for his crimes. He suffered 20 of the 30 lashes during his life behind bars.
Kalicharan spent 22 years in prison until his conviction was overturned and he was released in July 2013.
